Midler不是一位创作型歌手，但她在选歌方面从来有着第一流的品味。新专辑的制作人Don Was是流行音乐界有名的“回春圣手”，近10年来，他为多位老歌手制作过使其事业再上新高的优秀专辑，如Bonnie Raitt、Bob Dylan和Willie Nelson，此次他也出手不凡，为《Bette》确立了一种成熟、大气、怀旧的基调，与Midler的身份和年龄非常相称。

专辑的一大特色就是将多首中板的黑人R&B歌曲作了更加流行化的处理，打头曲是翻唱Baby Washington1960年的“That's How Heartaches Are Made”，此外还有The Temptations组合1971年的“Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)”（这首歌最近十分吃香，女影星Gwennyth Paltrow与Babyface在新片《Duets》的原声带中也翻唱了一个版本）、Teddy Pendergrass的“Love TKO”和Manhattans的“Shining Star”等。几首新作也都水准不俗，在Latin-pop加热带funk风格的“In These Shoes”中，Midler再次展现了自己的喜剧天赋，把歌曲演绎得如同一出热热闹闹的小音乐剧。“Color of Roses”和“When Your Life Was Low”则是标准的流行情歌。“Nobody Else but You”是一首轻松流畅的作品，也是Midler即将上映的情景喜剧《Bette》的主题歌。

全碟最有份量的一首歌是6分半长的“God Give Me Strength”，这首歌曲的出处——Burt Bacharach与Elvis Costello2年前的《Painted From Memory》专辑是我本人非常钟爱的一张唱片，Elvis Costello的沉郁动情的原唱已经无比出色了，但Bette Midler还是为这首歌曲赋予了自己的风格——沧桑、独立、又不失温柔。而专辑中唯一的一首纯快歌——techno风格“Bless You Child”则是一次失败的尝试，Midler毕竟不是Madonna，不是什么风格都玩得转的。

其实这张专辑在音乐上并没有什么新东西，更谈不上什么突破，但它就是那么优雅、好听、讨人喜欢。经过30年的历练，Bette Midler的唱功已经达到了炉火纯青的境界，那种收放自如的大将风度，让人想起了许多……

这张唱片非常适宜在夜晚独自聆听，Midler温柔的演唱就像一支蜡烛——不足以照亮整个房间，但散射出温暖亲切的光芒，让人一次又一次地为她感动。
